Window Installation
Prefabricated window installation
The time taken to install a new window depends on the size of the window. If you require more than one window to be put in, it is advisable to start with a smaller window as this is easier to install and thus will prove to be encouragement for further jobs.
The process of installing windows in new buildings is similar to replacement work; only it has two major differences. Most modern window designs have an exterior mounting flange that reduces/does away with the need for wedges. The installation of new windows into the exterior wall of the building needs to be done as it is raised.
The easy availability of prefabricated windows in the market today makes the task of installing windows and sills more convenient as most manufacturers can supply any size for not much difference in cost than that of normal standard dimensions.
Process of window installation
The convenience and availability of prefabricated windows allows greater freedom of planning to the homeowner as he can plan new window openings at any size or shape he desires. All he needs to keep in mind when placing the order is that the windows should be an inch or an inch and a half shorter/narrower than the rough openings. This leaves him with a half to three-fourths inch of wedging space all round the windows, if need be. Windows with mounting flange requires that they be set in place from the outside and the flanges have caulking put on them before they go in. Lining of the window opening perimeter with a plastic sill protector and flashing will give more protection as these keep moisture out from getting to the wood.
Window installation can be cost effective and convenient
One thing to remember would be that that most windows have screw holes in the flanges for mounting purposes and for a secure installation, two pairs of wedges supporting the bottom of newly constructed windows is a good idea. Flashing and sill covers make it more energy-efficient in the long run so try to install these too and your work is cost effective too.
